Holt Will Welcome Its Own Farmers Market

At long last, Holt will have its own farmers market. Holt Farmers Market is scheduled to open this July in the old fire department building at 2150 Cedar Street. This location has room for approximately 16 indoor spaces as well as outdoor space for additional vendors. “The Holt Farmers Market will be about quality of life with a strong emphasis on education,” says Al McFadyen, executive director of the Delhi Township DDA.

“We really like the idea of local people being able to buy locally-grown produce. We’re hoping to attract local farmers–both big and small–to rent space.” Al adds that there will also be some spaces rented to artisans.

Chuck Grinnell, owner of Holt Shoe Repair, has been named part-time manager of the market. He’s currently working on setting up contracts, rules and regulations and getting the location ready. “Chuck brings great energy and enthusiasm to the project,” says Al. “He’ll give Holt Farmers Market the jump start it needs to get up and running.” Chuck hopes the new market will act as a stepping stone for new businesses. Opening is tentatively set for July 12. A website with information for vendors and customers is being developed, and is scheduled to go up in mid-May at holtfarmersmarket.org

Tree Streets form Neighborhood Association

The Tree Streets Neighborhood Association was formed last summer with the goal of developing a sense of community within the neighborhood. The group emphasizes that their purpose is not to create rules, but to provide opportunities for neighbors to socialize and support one another.

All Tree Streets residents are welcome and encouraged to join. The neighborhood is bounded by Holt Road on the north, Sycamore Street on the south, Elm Street on the west, and Schoolcraft Street on the east. If you are interested in joining, contact Greg Talberg at 699-3049.

Security Devices Now Eligible for CRRP

Security devices designed to thwart or detect theft and vandalism were among the topics covered in a series of crime prevention seminars hosted for Holt businesses by the Delhi Township DDA and the Ingham County Sheriff's Office.

As a result of the seminars, a number of business owners expressed interest in purchasing security equipment. The DDA Board of Directors chose to support this interest by revising the Commercial Rehabilitation Rebate Program (CRRP) to include the purchase and installation of exterior security devices.

Such equipment includes motion detectors, enhanced exterior lighting and outside security camera systems. Businesses within the DDA District may now receive a rebate in the amount of 50% of the cost of purchasing and installing exterior security equipment, up to a maximum rebate amount of $10,000 per property. As with any other CRRP project, application and project approval guidelines must be met.

Please feel free to contact Helen Harrison or Al McFadyen if you have any questions about the CRRP or would like further information. We can be reached at 517-699-3866 during normal business hours.

Construction Projects Will Affect Local Traffic

The summer 2008 construction season will be a busy one in Holt. Major street reconstruction projects funded by the Delhi Township DDA are scheduled for the Cedar Heights neighborhood (Aurelius and Willoughby) and the Holt-Depot Street-Delhi N.E. area. The Holt-Depot project will also include substantial reconstruction of the sanitary sewers in the area. This in turn will necessitate the complete closure of Holt Road at Depot Street for an extended period of time. Most of the sewer reconstruction cost will be financed by the Township's Sewer Fund.

Notices to directly affected property owners have been mailed. Updates on the projects will appear on the respective web sites of the Township and DDA.

As in the past, each commercial showcased the Holt/Delhi area and featured two non-competing businesses. 30 businesses participated this year.

If you think you might be interested in participating next year, please contact Al McFadyen, DDA Executive Director, 699-3866.
